Looking for Brisbane’s greatest pocket of suburbs to live or invest in? Look no further than the inner-west

By Kris Matthews

The recently released Domain Liveable Cities study has revealed what the Ray White Toowong team have known for decades – the inner west is home to some of the most liveable and desirable suburbs across Brisbane.

The study, authored by Deloitte Access Economics and Tract Consultants, ranked Greater Brisbane’s 260 suburbs in terms of liveability. The 17 indicators utilised to quantify liveability covered a wide range of aspects including access to public transport, schools, employment and cafes, as well as things like crime rate, traffic congestion, airport noise, tree cover, open space, walkability, and proximity to the coast or beach.

Individual suburbs were given a score for each of the 17 categories, and then, based on those scores, given a weighted average score out of 10 and ranked according to the results.

Of the 260 suburbs, just 14 scored 10 out of 10, and a further 29 scoring 9 out of 10. Auchenflower and Taringa both scored a 10 out of 10, and Toowong a 9 out of 10 (ranked 11th, 14th and 16th respectively across all of Brisbane suburbs)!

The Domain Liveable Cities study concluded the following about our local area, the inner west – Auchenflower, Taringa, Toowong and St Lucia.

  1. Auchenflower

The inner city suburb of Auchenflower is well known for its enviable hilly landscape, but it also scores highly for culture and access to employment. The suburb is very walkable, with many of its residents commuting via its local train station. Although its leafy streets helped secure it a strong tree cover score, its overall ranking was let down by a lack of open space and a low mark for congestion.

  1. Taringa

Located about six kilometres south-west of the city, Taringa is well serviced by both bus and train public transport options, which means it also scores highly for access to employment. The suburb also has a varying landscape, which not only boasts plenty of tree cover it is highly walkable.

  1. Toowong

Toowong has become a well known café precinct over recent years, and so it unsurprisingly scores highly in that category. With its location just a few kilometres from the city, as well as being adjacent to the Brisbane River, residents use its excellent bus services to commute for work as well as spend plenty of time walking around the suburb.

  1. St Lucia

Situated on a peninsula with the Brisbane River on three sides, St Lucia offers some of the best water views in the city. The suburb is also well known for being home to the University of Queensland. If that isn’t enough, St Lucia also ranks highly for access to employment as well as walkability, cafes and culture.

It’s great to see Deloitte Access Economics and Tract Consultants quantifying in the Domain Liveable Brisbane study what we already knew!
