No Grass? No Worries – Here Are Some Great Lawn Alternatives

By Coralie Mackenzie

Not everyone has the time (or desire) to mow, water and fuss over a lawn. Luckily there are plenty of low maintenance alternatives to keep your outdoor space looking lush and inviting (with no grass required).

Synthetic Turf

Love the look of grass without the upkeep? Artificial turf has come a long way. It’s kid and pet friendly, easy to install yourself and looks surprisingly real. Best of all, there’s no mowing or watering; just hte occasional sweep or hose down to keep it looking fresh.

Pebbles and Stones

Want something super low effort that still looks great? Rock based ground covers like pebbles and stones come in a variety of colours and sizes, perfect for pathways, driveways or garden borders. They’re easy to maintain (just a rake now and again) and help keep the weeds at bay.

Mulch

Mulch isn’t just for garden beds. Bark chips or wood mulch also works as an affordable ground cover that adds texture and colour to your yard. They’re easy to lay over soil or weed cloth and can be topped up regularly without breaking the bank.

Moss

Got a shady backyward? Moss might be your best friend. It’s a soft, green ground cover that thrives in low light and needs next to no maintenance. Some varieties even look like miniature grass.

Ground Cover Plants

There are loads of low-growing plants that spread beautifully and fill empty spaces in garden beds, between pavers or along borders. Whether you want bursts of colour or interesting foliage, there’s ground cover plant to suit your style.

Herbs as Lawn Alternatives

Looking for a more useful “lawn”? Try herbs! Oregano, Thyme, Mint and Chamomile can cover the ground while also smelling amazing and being edible. Many varieties handle foot traffic well and look great between stepping stones or along pathways. Other great lawn alternatives include Dichondra, Pigface, Pratia, Native Voilets and more.

Veggie Garden

Why not turn that lawn in to lunch? A raised veggie patch not only looks good but saves you money and helps teach the kids where food comes from. Plus it’s a great family project.

Patio Space

If entertaining is more your style, a patio could be the way to go. Whether paved or concrete, patios are a low maintenance, versatile and perfect for everything from morning coffees to outdoor dinner parties.

Gazebo or Outdoor Nook

Want a shady spot to read, relax or enjoy a drink? A gazebo creates a charming focal point and pairs well with garden beds or patio areas

Fire Pit Area

Nothing beats a fire pit on a cool evening. Whether you build it yourself or buy one ready-made, surround it with pebbles, seats or a paved area to create a cozy gathering space that’s as functional as it is stylish.
